According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were almost 6,000 pedestrians killed by cars in 2016. A majority of those crashes happened when it was dark outside, as opposed to other times of day. A majority of crashes also occurred at areas other than intersections.
Drivers should be looking for pedestrians all the time, should be prepared to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and should display extra caution when backing up. However, drivers do not always do these things. Sometimes this failure is caused by conditions that make it challenging to see pedestrians. Other times drivers may be driving too fast to stop in time or they may be distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
